Algorithmic Bias Testing Statement
Binder Community Limited · No. 17058768
Overview
Binder uses algorithms to help people discover and connect, and AI-based tools to moderate images for safety. We are committed to these systems being as fair as possible and to testing them for bias. This statement explains our approach.
1. Scope
This statement covers our discovery/matching features and our automated image content-moderation tools.
2. Our commitment
We do not want our systems to discriminate against people because of a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 (including race, religion, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, and age). We design, test and monitor our systems with that aim.
3. Risks we test for
discovery/matching that systematically advantages or disadvantages people with particular protected characteristics;
moderation that disproportionately flags or removes content from particular communities — for example LGBTQ+ content being wrongly treated as ‘adult’ or ‘unsafe’;
inferring or acting on sensitive characteristics without a lawful basis; and
feedback loops that could expose or disadvantage particular groups.
4. How we test and monitor
documenting the purpose and data used by each system;
testing outcomes across groups for disparate impact, using appropriate, privacy-respecting methods;
keeping a human in the loop for moderation decisions that significantly affect users, with a right to human review and appeal;
monitoring live performance and investigating reports of unfair outcomes; and
recording our testing and decisions.
5. Mitigations
Where we find unfair outcomes, we adjust the system, the data, or the rules, and we strengthen human oversight. We do not use personal data to train general-purpose or third-party AI models.
6. Governance
The DPO / product lead owns this statement and our bias-testing programme, which is reviewed at least annually and on material change.
7. Reporting concerns and changes
If you think you have experienced an unfair outcome, contact us. We may update this statement from time to time.
